More of Stella's origin. Okay, so I guess technically this is pushing the gen thing. But, dude, it's not like it goes anywhere further than this, and it's still the kind of entirely character-and-plot-focused-thing that gets filed in my brain as gen.

(Like, I had this moment when I was reviewing fic for my website, and I was paging through the the DMVs, which is also a thing I think of as gen, and there's, like, two people in bed together. And one of them gets up and she's naked. Not, like, graphically described, totally something you could do on network TV, but I was looking at that thinking, dude, some people might not think of this as gen.)

But it's not like gen definitions have ever been, y'know, clear.

"You know what pisses me off, Cap?"



Stella can think of any number of things. Fury seems to be pretty much constantly pissed off. She got used to it after a few days, writes it off as a general dull Fury roar, nothing to worry about. "The mosquitos?" she guesses, smacking one on her shoulder.



"No, they're all going for you." He stretches smugly. "Maybe the smoke scares 'em off. No, what pisses me off is that you'd be a decorated hero by now, instead of just coming back from a shakedown mission with piece of shit equipment," and he kicks the broken shield, "if only you tinkled standing up." 


She's rather pleased that he curses freely around her now, but just keeps sketching. "Should I put a sock in my pants and start dancing with girls, Sir?"



"Hell no. You should do just what you're doing--showing them you're a damn fine soldier."



"Good." She peers down at her chest for a moment. She's still tied down from the field work earlier--should probably change soon, she thinks, it's starting to pinch, and no doubt has some blood in it--but there's a smooth swell under her uniform shirt nonetheless. "These are too damn big for me to get away with it, anyway."



Fury's guffaw is so loud he startles the watch.

(In case you're wondering? She's, like, C-cup. Maybe a D. And, no, she wasn't trying to pass as male; she pretty much never has. And, yeah, that's small for comic proportions. But when you're that physically active? You tie them the fuck down. Because otherwise it's the kind of pain and distraction you really don't need in combat. Just another one of those little things that a lot of--okay, yes, I'm going to be a twat for a moment here--male writers don't get.)

Yup, trying to write. Conversation around me extremely entertaining. Have a bit of an action scene that I'm not going to be able to finish for ages. Stella's first mission with the Howling Commandos, because nobody else besides Nick Fury will take her. She's ambushed; they think she's lost.

The deafening bark of the cleanup frag, right on schedule, jumps all the men half out of their skins.



Fury smiles to himself and lights up.



The fire's behind her as she comes out of the night, striding over the broken ground, no sign of pain. Six feet of muscle and leather and stars, silhouetted against the burning battlefield, with blood and muck and triumph on her face.



Men jolt to their feet, swear, murmur in awe.



Stella drops her shield, cracked and scarred from gunfire, between Fury's feet.



"I think I need a better one."



Fury looks up with a slow, triumphant grin. "Welcome back, Captain America."

As was stated frequently last year, cherry 7-up is crack.

A few weeks after she gets out of basic, Stella is starting to feel like the object of an Army-sized game of pass the parcel. It would almost be funny if men weren't dying out there, every day, a war going by while she twiddles her thumbs because nobody knows what to do with her.



She trains obsessively, makes friends with the toughest drill sergeant on the base, goes back and tries to beat all her own records now that she knows how to handle herself better--and is bored out of her skull. The only one that's even half as out of place as she is the camp kid, the little orphan spitfire, Bucky. "So Private Kevins told me--after I wiped the floor with him--that he'd double dare me to go pick a fight with Rogers." Quick suspicious eyes looking her up and down. "I think he's having me on, no offense, ma'am, 'cause you're the only Rogers round here--"



She takes him down in less than a minute. Helps him up as he says, "Whoa, that was somethin'! Let's do it again!"



They're fast friends by nightfall.

Okay, I admit, I'm pulling this scene out of stuff I've already written. Because we'll be breaking for lunch after this post, and I probably will just have a few one-liners for the next few posts because, y'know, food. Haven't had enough yet. And writing up more fic, then. But first, food.

When the fic is compiled--this is one of those montages of scenes jumping about in time fics--this will be the first good look we get at Andrea. The first chapter starts with that first scene I posted, with Stella visiting her old home, and then it's like twenty-zillion flashbacks to give us all of her backstory, and the war and so forth, and then at the end there's this. Leading into the next chapter, which will be mostly Andrea at various points. And that's the sort of thing I'll be writing at five this morning when I'm incoherent and dealing with her ANGST.

Because, y'know, Iron Man. "Torture me" is spray-painted on the shiny metal ass. And Andrea's fucked up in ways that aren't even on Tony Stark's map.

I am taking far more liberty with Donna Blake's backstory than with the others. Because she's not, like, Don Blake with the same approximate background and no Y chromosome. She's pretty much a completely different person, Thor got incarnated as a completely different human being, just with a similar name for, y'know, metatextual reasons.

So I totally did not manage to get, like, breakfast before Blogathon. (Because I had to get down from Salem and pick up three people and yeah.) So I'm lagging a bit, trying to get enough coffee in my system and sort out a few things about this fic and get breakfast. Need food. Haven't found food yet.

I also didn't have a chance to pre-load as much research as I'd hoped. These past few weeks? Utterly crazy. On the other hand, I am the wordiest motherfucker that ever worded these days, so simply writing some of the scenes that I know but haven't taken down yet might take all day. Especially since my verbal processor hasn't started up yet. Trouble coding my thoughts in language properly. Oh, dear. At least I type stupid fast. (99 WPM, according to that meme that went about recently.)

I wish I was still dating E. Then I'd have girlfriendy rights to drag him down here so we have a resident massage therapist.

She was such a pretty little girl, they all said. Golden curls and big blue eyes and a smile like fireworks. Born on the Fourth of July.



Her father was a boxer, loud in his cups and a bull in the ring, but otherwise a gentle man. So many of her earliest memories are from high up, riding about on his broad shoulders. His little star.



As she grew, she liked to shadow him as he shadowboxed, learning everything he knew that she could see with those bright eyes. Her mother would have disapproved--but her mother went away, tuberculosis, when she was ten. He drank more, then, fought harder, kept his head lower. She ran in a pack with the neighborhood boys and learned to jump fences.
